I tap back my reply.

Happy Thanksgiving. Good, because I would have been so pissed at you.

The next is from Evan.

Goodnight, gorgeous.

I feel my bottom lip quiver as I look down at the screen. I want to reply, but if I do, it may start a conversation about the mess I’ve made, and I do not have it in me to do that.

Instead, I decide to mentally torture myself by scrolling through the messages he and I have sent each other. A tear slides down my face because it only takes me a couple minutes to read every one of them, and I truly wish my text chain with Evan Smith was so long it would read like a novel.

I’m a swipe away from deleting the entire thing off my phone when my door opens and he walks in, closing it behind him.

I wipe my face and whisper, “You can’t be in here.”

He locks the door behind him, walks over, slides onto the other side of the bed, and pulls me into his arms. “Talk to me, Kameron.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I am, too.”

I look up at him. “For what?”

Both of our phones chime.

I pull away from him and cross my arms. “I have no right to be pissed at you, but I am.”

“I have every right to be pissed at you, but I’m not.” He leans against the headboard, crossing his own arms.

“That’s because I’m not online, looking for my next hookup right in front of you,” I hiss and then realize how stupid that sounds.

My phone rings. I cringe while reaching over and declining the call.

“You might wanna get that. Could be your boyfriend,” he states simply.

His phone dings again.

“And you may want to get that, player. It might be your next thirsty girl.”

Even saying those words, I don’t feel they hold true for him. I have no reason to believe he’s lied to me. For me, though, that’s another story.

He looks down, shaking his head. “Told you we weren’t done.”

My phone rings again.

“If you don’t want to answer it, I have no problem telling him you met a guy whose heads up his ass about you, and yours about him.”

My eyes burn, and the phone rings again.

“Just don’t say anything.”

“Fine.” He links his fingers behind his neck, sits back, and gets comfortable.

“Hello?”

“You’re upset with me.”

“Nope, just tired.”

He sighs. “I would never tell my mother about—”

“I know.”

“Then what’s up with the reply? I’m not your favorite guy anymore?”

Evan’s brow arches, and I realize he can hear this whole conversation.

“Kameron, you can tell me anything, you know that.”

I pull my knees to my chest. “I know.”

“And you also know your happiness is—”

“I know. Can we talk about this over winter break?”

“Of course. We’ll talk then. Miss you.”

“Miss you, too.” I end the call and set my phone down.

“You’d miss me more.”

When he looks at my lips, I realize I’m pouting and that my lip is trembling. I look down at his pocket.

“Promise you that I’m not on a dating site, and I wish
